Near-Future Watch: Digital Merit Badges for Job Seekers

The New York Times has another look at the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Merit Badge Project:

The MacArthur Foundation is putting millions of dollars into a competition to spur interest in a new type of badge — one that people can display not on their clothing but on a Web site, blog or Facebook page while they are looking for a job.

The badges will not replace résumés or transcripts, but they may be a convenient supplement, putting the spotlight on skills that do not necessarily show up in traditional documents — highly specialized computer knowledge, say, or skills learned in the military, in online courses or in after-school programs at museums or libraries.

Brilliant idea. One can easily imagine that the online learning community will rally around this. Authenticity will be verified by the issuer. A crucial feature.

This will be very helpful in job searches, helping people find job positions that align closely with their official credentials.

Onboarding Best Practices Webinar

Many onboarding programs are off-target. They result in false starts, wrong match up of employees and needs, longer competency build-up and delayed contributions to actual operational performance. It spells out higher costs and lost opportunities for the organization. One apparent cause is that most onboarding programs often focus on the acquisition of knowledge and skill, while the environment for immediate learning, performance, tracking and accelerated contributions is often deferred to a later phase or as an afterthought.

Join us for this webinar, as we help you get the mission-critical onboarding off to the right start. Dr. Ray Jimenez outlines a total approach for organizations that combines learning, performance and metrics to help all employees perform faster and contribute more quickly, all at lower costs to the business.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to capture your top performers’ profiles and use these as benchmarks in selecting new employees, cutting time between hiring and job performance.
  • How to design learning structures that include operational demands on Day One of the onboarding program , thereby providing a seamless and faster transition to the job;
  • How to develop a metrics system that integrates learning activities and performance data to increase the feedback and assessment loop from learning, on-the-job performance, coaching and fast-tracking.

Ray Jimenez, PhD is Chief Architect for Vignettes Learning. He was a PricewaterhouseCoppers (PWC) management consultant for learning and systems implementation. His client list covers Neiman Marcus, Darden Restaurants, Pearson, NASA, Cisco, US Department of State, and others. He is the author of 3-Minute eLearning, Scenario-Based Learning, Micro-Performance Systems, and Story Impacts. Ray is also systems architect developing software in social learning performance applications.

Interior Designers in Healthcare Get Certified @ eCornell

The web-based, instructor-led courses were authored by Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology. Participants who complete the 6-course certificate will be awarded 1.8 AAHID continuing education units (CEUs), or can take one of three approved individual courses for 0.6 CEU hours each: Planning & Designing a Healing Environment, Basic Tools for Facility Planning and Practice-Based Research.

A highlight of the program is the evidence-based design course with Cornell University Professor Frank Becker, Department Chair of Design & Environmental Analysis. Participants explore the dynamic relationships between nursing unit design, the interaction of patient care teams and the cumulative effects on quality of care.

The certificate further positions AAHID as the industry’s primary healthcare interior design credentialing organization, and demonstrates the real value it brings to Board-certified designers by offering opportunities for career advancement and greater job fulfillment. Professionals who complete the six-course certificate will gain competence in facilities planning, strategic expansion and organizational decision-making processes.

“At the AAHID, we are careful to ensure that every decision we make ties directly back to our mission: the credentialing of healthcare interior designers,” says Jocelyn Stroupe, President of AAHID “Continuing education is vital to our membership, and we strive to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for professional growth and career advancement. The AAHID board found that eCornell’s online certificate programs and courses were a solid fit for our organization and will be instrumental in serving our members and helping us realize our mission.”

eCornell’s unique approach to e-learning combines the most effective elements of an Ivy League classroom with the flexibility of an online learning environment. eCornell courses—while self-paced and 100% online—are “instructor-facilitated” to help guide a cohort of 20 to 30 participants through challenging, real-world exercises with practical application on the job. Built-in collaboration features enable learners to share experiences, best practices and discuss on-the-job application attempts while immersed in learning that fosters collaboration, interaction and networking amongst the cohort.

Customer for Life: The Holy Grail of Hospitality

Hospitality people know how vital regular customers are to staying in business. Regulars may not always run up the biggest restaurant bill or book the most expensive rooms, but over time, those familiar faces and repeat business lead to steady earnings long-term. And those regular customers are the ones most likely to actively promote your business or refer you to their friends.

But it’s astounding how often businesses ignore the fundamentals. When a disproportionate amount of time or attention is paid to new customers or large groups, regulars may become dissatisfied with the decline in service or feel they are being taken for granted. Earning customers for life is not a one-time accomplishment. It’s an evolving relationship that requires nurturing and constant evaluation.

Cultivating long-term customer loyalty should drive your entire business strategy. From the company’s mission statement down to individual performance goals, “earn customers for life” should be adopted as a mantra for your entire organization.

Want to know exactly how important a regular customer is to your business? Run the numbers. Calculate the lifetime value of a customer’s loyalty by taking an average bill and multiply it by the number of times they visit in a year. You’ve got a lifetime value metric in place, and now you can gauge the net effect that losing this regular customer might have on your bottom line.

Ask for their feedback, solicit their opinions, and most importantly, respond to their criticisms. They can help you improve your business practices. And do everything you can to ensure that when asked, they’ll speak highly of your business and recommend you to others.

Stever Robbins is right on the money in his piece about lifetime value. The takeaway: Keep that special jar of hot peppers in stock, if only for the guy who eats at your restaurant 5 days a week.
